McCain’s Stand on Social Security
Recently, McCain took a bold and ambiguous stance on Social Security, stating that the current tax-based system was a “disgrace.”
I was not quite sure what he meant, really. Beyond treating me to a really fetching photo of the Senator, McCain’s Web site didn’t help much. It has no entry on Social Security.
So I resort to the latest comments he made to CNN, quoted by the LA Times, just recently:
“I want young workers to be able to, if they choose, to take part of their own money, which is their taxes, and put it in an account which has their name on it…”
As with much of his economic policy, it is not quite clear how McCain intends to use this idea to make Social Security solvent. Would it be tied to the market via the accounts? Would it be another form of government 401k?
There is no telling. No doubt, as with the Clinton campaign before him, McCain’s campaign thinks it’s better that way.

Mr. Spur of the Moment, I’ll Say Anything to Anyone, But I Have Almost No Real Solutions is at it again. Who does he think he will court now? Disillusioned Gen Xers? I am one of those people who gratefully gets a check every month which I earned with over 42 years of hard work and taxes, which I now find paid for everyone ahead of me in the line and apparently those working now will find me in the line ahead of them. Am I making sense or do I sound like McCain?! Yikes! Sorry but the system is what it is and privatizing it will not solve a darn thing. If we can get the economy back into a situation where we can actually spend cash and not credit card dollars — or rewards miles — if you are silly enough to fall for that one — then we can talk about Social Security.
On another note, I am finding it absolutely hilarious that John McCain is sounding like an Obama parrot — funny how everything Senator Obama has espoused, and which has been derided, whether as foreign or domestic policy, is now finding its way through McCain — As Rachel Madow said, Obama wants two brigades in Afghanistan and Senator M raises him by one — the CW will call and raise by two! By the way, Senator M, can you stop looking at your notes and try to find a way to make eye contact every once in a while?! Who’s doing your prep, Mortimer Snerd?!
